As of 2022, just under 2% of all Florida attorneys are Board Certified, making this a distinction that truly sets those that achieve this status apart from other attorneys. Our Senior Partners Tom Carey and Jodi Leisure are nationally board certified in Civil Trial law as well, a distinction that even fewer attorneys in the State of Florida have achieved, and only 4% of all practicing attorneys in the United States have earned.

The Requirements for Board Certification in Florida Include:
Practice of law for a minimum of five years
To develop expertise in the field of civil trial practice, the Florida Bar requires a minimum of five years in practice before an attorney may apply.
Substantial involvement in the specialty of civil trial law
At least 50% or more of the practice of law – during the three years immediately preceding application.
Handling of at least 15 contested civil cases
This includes cases before juries as lead counsel and as trier of fact on some or all of the issues.
Ongoing Education
This entails continuing education in the area of civil trial law immediately preceding application.
Peer review
Because the Florida Bar representatives meet with lawyers and judges for a peer review of all applicants, Board Certification remains the only objective standard that can inform the public of the quality of the lawyer’s work.
A Written Examination
The examination covers several topics essential to the practice of Civil Trial law, including litigation skills, evidence, ethics, and civil procedure. The four-part test is designed to evaluate the applicant’s knowledge and application of Florida’s rules of ethics and civil laws.
